protesis_hombroTotal shoulder replacement is a surgery performed to treat different shoulder conditions and injuries, such as severe shoulder fractures, arthrosis, rheumatoid arthritis and rotator muscle injury.

Shoulder prosthesis or replacement or arthroplasty is a surgical procedure in which the glenohumeral joint (the joint between the head of the humerus and the scapula) is replaced with a prosthetic implant.

ThIs procedure is mainly indicated in cases of evolved arthrosis or severe rheumatoid arthritis shoulder pain control and regain lost functionality. It also applies in cases after some proximal shoulder fractures where surgical reconstruction is not possible.

During this surgery, the worn joint is replaced by a new articulation made up of metal and plastic. For total shoulder replacement, the round end of the arm bone is replaced with an artificial stem that has a rounded metal head. The part of the cavity (glenoid) of the scapula will be replaced with a smooth plastic cover that will remain in place with special cement.

The results of this procedure have significantly improved, having currently a high rate of success comparable to that of the knee and hip. Most patients show a clear improvement in pain control and functional recovery after the shoulder surgery.
