Are used to eliminate gingivitis which is inflammation of the gingival tissue that can affect the teeth and bones to which they are attached. Plaque, acids and certain foods contribute to the development of gingivitis. There are two methods to reverse the disease: tooth scaling and root planing.
Scaling can be done manually and with the use of ultrasound instruments. The procedure begins with a thorough examination of your mouth. Then the dentist uses a device that removes plaque by vibration. This device removes tartar (calculus), plaque and bacterial film on the surface of the teeth and under the gum line. Then, the dentist can use hand tools to remove the debris that has remained on the surface of the tooth or below the gum line.
Root planing involves careful scraping of the tooth root in order to reduce inflammation. The dentist performs the scaling procedure to smooth uneven areas and prevent the growth of plaque and bacterial film.
